He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy's parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their advice. The old man was now in the eightieth day with no fish to show for his work and he was getting worried and now he had begun to think about the boy. He had seen the boy's family once. They lived at the city end of the island and the boy had gone to school there. The old man had gone there once, too, but not as a boy. He had gone there after the war to get his papers and to see the boy. The boy was about thirteen then and his family had had a store there and the old man had gone to see him in his father's store. The boy was his only friend on the island and he had taught him to fish and the boy had listened to all the old man's stories and he had gone to the old man with the boy's father when the boy's father had killed a marine to eat. The old man had seen the family only once after that. But the boy had gone on to school and the old man had come back to his skiff and to the Gulf Stream.
